PORT ELIZABETH – The first state witness in the Omotoso trial, Cheryl Zondi, will have to relive her trauma.
Zondi is expected back in court to re-testify in the rape trial of Nigerian Pastor Timothy Omotoso.
Judge Mandela Makaula who was presiding over the trial, has recused himself from the case.
Makaula says his recusal is in the interest of justice.
Zondi broke down several times last year during her cross cross-examination at the Port Elizabeth High Court as she gave harrowing testimony of how Omotoso, allegedly raped and sexually assaulted her.
Omotoso’s lawyer, Peter Duaberman was heavily critised for his line of questioning.
Omotoso is accused of raping and sexually assaulting several women from his Jesus Dominion International Church.
Earlier this year, reports emerged that Makaula was linked to a guesthouse used to accommodate state witnesses.
Makuala says his wife’s business ventures may give rise to allegations of bias.
With Makaula having recused himself, for witnesses like Zondi, it means opening themselves up to potential secondary trauma.
Eastern Cape Judge President, Selby Mbenenge has ordered the trial to re-commence on 30 July.
A new judge is yet to be announced.
