Zolani Mahola to star at Concert in the Park

Port Elizabeth-born musicians will be taking centre stage at the annual Concert in the (Victoria) Park presented by Algoa FM and The Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (ECPO).

The orchestra will be led by South Africa’s favourite conductor, Richard Cock, who was born in Port Elizabeth, and started his schooling at Woodridge.

Fans will experience a different facet to the talent of Freshlyground’s lead singer Zolani Mahola, who will be the soloist for the two concerts being staged in Victoria Park. Born in Bhisho, Mahola grew up on Ntshekisa Street in New Brighton. Zolani gave back to her community in spectacular fashion last year when Freshlyground gave a free concert on Ntshekisa street as part of their tenth birthday tour.

Another guest artist with Port Elizabeth roots is renowned trumpeter Marcus Wyatt, Wyatt’s father was chairman of the local folk club, and he was exposed to music from a young age. He started playing trumpet for his school band at the age of 11.

The Concert in the Park 2012 with the ECPO and Algoa FM will be filling Victoria Park with beautiful sounds on Saturday, February 18 from 5:00 pm, and Sunday the 19th from 10:00 am.

Tickets will be available at the gate: R80 for adults, R60 for pensioners, R30 for scholars and free for preschoolers.

Bring your own chairs, picnic blankets, snacks and refreshments.

The Longhair, her apprentice and I attended last year’s concert on the Sunday and had a thoroughly rocking good time with a picnic basket full of goodies. Which makes me think – if you have some suggestions for picnic recipes submit them here so that we can all enjoy picnics of note.
