Protest action on the planned route for the second City of Champions Youth Challenge led to the postponement of the race.
Organizers of the 2nd City of Champions Youth Challenge in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and safety and security apparatus postponed yesterday’s event as a precautionary measure in the interest of the safety of the athletes.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Director for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Noxolo Nqwazi, said the decision was made due to protests in the vicinity of Koyana and Johnson Roads directly on the planned 5km and 10km route for the event scheduled to start at 07:00.
Mr Michael Mbambani, event organizer and Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) Official, said: “Following extensive consultation with the South African Police Services and the city’s Traffic Law Enforcement we had to apply EPA rules as we felt that we could not guarantee the safety of our athletes that came from afar afield as King Williamstown, East London, Kareedouw, Humansdorp, Somerset-West amongst other areas.
“We will meet over the weekend to determine a new date, venue and route for the race before announcing it on Monday,” Mbambani said
