Three dedicated young women from Port Elizabeth are hoping to join fellow youth at the annual World Youth Day programme in Rio de Janeiro in July 2013. Megan and Jaclyn Snyman and Claire Hutton, all from San Francesco Catholic Church in Charlo, hope to raise enough funds to attend the five-day event which seeks to bring together youth from around the world to discuss issues related to their experiences of the church. Thus far, the three women have raised over R25 000, but still have some way to go to meet their R60 000 target.
“To be able to share our experiences with other young people and to have the opportunity to engage in discussions about issues relevant to us and to the Church would be a life-defining experience,” says Jaclyn. The team has been working hard to make their dream a reality so that they can be part of this unique event.
Claire adds, “In this world there is so much dark it is sometimes hard to see the light, [in July] I will be part of the light that shows this same world that the youth of my generation is not lost to sin. That we still have faith, hope and love, and as long as we are around God’s light will always shine through us.”
The next event on the fundraising calendar for the trio is a bridal show and high tea to be held on 13 April from 15:00 in the San Francesco Church Hall. Cost is R60 per person. Call Megan on 083 452 4731.
Other upcoming fundraising events include a Golf Day and Bingo evening. For details of these and other fundraising events or to donate, please email Jaclyn at jaclyn_kelly[at]hotmail.com.
