A wonder goal from recent Bafana Bafana newcomer David Zulu sunk Orlando Pirates in a deflating 1-0 Premiership defeat against hoodoo team Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon.
It was as early as the sixth minute that Zulu launched a weaving dribble from close to the halfway line, past four bewildered and bemused Pirates defenders before unleashing an unstoppable thunderbolt shot into the corner of the net.
The jarring defeat seriously dented Pirates league title hopes against a team whom they have never beaten.
Inspired by Zulu’s goal, Chippa United gave as good as they got for the entire 90 minutes and completed a remarkable double in their last two games by beating Soweto giants Moroka Swallows and Pirates after previously wallowing close to the relegation zone.
With Pirates desperately seeking an equaliser in the closing stages, Chippa United should have doubled the lead when four of their players launched an incisive counter-attack against two defenders only to nullify the clear-cut advantage with over-elaboration.
The Buccaneers somewhat surprisingly left stalwarts Issa Sarr, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Sifiso Myeni on the bench at the outset and only brought them into the action during the last 30 minutes.
But Pirates by this stage were playing with acute anxiety and showing little rapport, with Mbongeni Mzimela in the Chippa United goal dealing competently with the few on-target efforts that came his way.
With tempers becoming heated, players from both sides were booked as Pirates slipped from fourth position in the log and failed to make up any leeway on the table-topping Kaizer Chiefs.
Chippa, meanwhile, have now vaulted six positions up the league table after their unlikely victories over Swallows and Pirates.
