Members of the DA Women’s Network in the Eastern Cape (DAWN) will hold another picket outside the North End Magistrate’s court tomorrow (Friday 4 October) at 09:30 to exert pubic pressure to ensure that Freddy Gordon’s sentence fits his crimes.
As caring citizens we will observe Gordon’s sentencing because we know that we represent the public interest and make this man feel uncomfortable.
Gordon is accused of assault, battery, burning and raping his wife, Avril, who is now blind in one eye. Avril struggles to walk and the use of her hands has been impaired. Her nose and an ear were virtually knocked off her face and she has had extensive plastic surgery to repair damage to her face and scalp where hair was ripped out by the roots.
DAWN Eastern Cape has monitored the case since its inception. We appeal for a sentence that shows that courts take domestic violence seriously.
Until the streets are safe we will not cease to demand protection of all gender and human rights as required by the South African Constitution.
