The Longhair and I have been playing ‘frog in a blender’ with the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees for some time now. Every year we travel up to Kirkwood and stay for just a bit longer.
This year we arrived on the Saturday morning and stayed until 9:30 pm before tackling the road home. The one disappointment was having to drink coffee and hot chocolate whilst all around me people were fuelling themselves with frothy stuff, fruit from the vine and various other poisins that make you feel silly, sexy or invincible. There is no way I am driving that road feeling the least bit out of sorts – gotta be sharp to avoid various idiots in charge of 4 wheeled killing machines.
The sheer number of people who travel out to Kirkwood is mind boggling, we were in a stream of vehicles from just outside Uitenhage all the way in to Kirkwood. Luckily for me the parking god was sitting on my shoulder and we got to park a five minute walk from the main entrance.
As always the stalls are of top quality, the entertainment slick and the people well behaved. One gripe for me is that the amount of people smoking in the main bar tent was rather intolerable – 2 hours watching rugby was enough for me as I could feel the stink of old smoke rising up from my skin, clothes and hair.
This year we cracked the nod to hob nob in the Absa courtesy/VIP tent and were treated to various nibbles, refreshments and a ‘can’t get closer to the stage’ position – thanks Cathy it was great.
It is well nigh impossible to see everything in a day and I can see us spending a night or two in Kirkwood next time around.
Below are images of what we DID manage to sample:
