Whack, Wiggle, Win

25 May 2018 By MyPortElizabeth

A VARIETY of competitions will leave golfers with plenty to choose from when the Whack, Waggle and Win Festival gets under way at the Humewood links in Port Elizabeth on Sunday 27 May.

Sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover Eastern Cape, the annual celebration of golf will provide a number of interesting options as it runs its course through until June 2.
With Wednesday and next Saturday as the premier sponsorship days, golfers in the region are in line to win some outstanding prizes during the week, while having a lot of fun as well.

Besides experiencing a true links course which has been brought to pristine condition for the festival, the organisers are planning a number of interesting activities off the course to keep everyone entertained.

Included in the overall offering is a par-three challenge which is scheduled for Thursday afternoon. This will give those who may not have time for a full round a chance to play nine holes, all set as par-threes, from about 3pm.

The challenge, with the emphasis on fun, will have a rate of R170 which includes a golf buggy.

The opening day on Sunday begins with an alliance competition, but a few twists have been thrown in to keep the golfers guessing.

Besides the regular stableford competitions, the organisers have introduced the Pinehurst option for Tuesday, which allows you some leeway off the tee, but calls for good teamwork thereafter.

In this format in which players compete in two-man teams, both golfers hit drives, with the best ball then being selected to play out the rest of the hole. The golfer whose drive was not chosen hits the second shot, and then the two play alternate shots into the hole.

It’s an interesting variation on the normal club competitions.

Thursday will call for accuracy all-round with a bonus bogey format, while the four-ball betterball stableford on Saturday will present golfers with a few mystery holes.

Although fields are full on some of the days, there are still openings for golfers interested in tackling the links, which comes a favourable green fee cost of R170 a player.

Bookings can be done through 041-583 2137 or bookings@humewoodgolf.co.za

The programme is:

  • May 27: Alliance, with a few twists
  • May 28: Individual stableford
  • May 29: Pinehurst
  • May 30: 4BBB stableford
  • May 31: 4BBB bonus bogey; par-three Challenge
  • June 1: Combined stableford with scrambled drive
  • June 2: 4BBB stableford, with mystery holes
