The recent funeral oratory by Sipho Pityana – explosive and shocking as it was – contained one huge vital flaw: His call for the leadership to heal themselves and caucus together to solve the problem that the ANC is faced.
The problem is greater than a small minority of learned and disciplined comrades. The ANC needs a huge shift in focus to once again become the champion of the downtrodden, the poor and oppressed. Moving from a revered revolutionary party to a government of delivery should have been the focus from Day One in 1994. Misguided greedy spending on projects that only benefited a few higher ups and many foreign industrialists where what set the ANC on the downward path.
The problem is a country wide one that needs to be fixed by all in the pursuit of justice.
As I listened to Pityana I sensed an almost xenophobic call by Xhosa to get rid of Zulu, a closing of the laager and a return to the old way, the revolutionary way.
I hope I am wrong for that will signal the death knell of the ANC who will then slip away faster than the National Party after 1994.
It must be shameful for the ANC Party Leadership to admit to themselves that the reconciliatory, redress messages sent to the country by Nelson Mandela have been ignored by successive leaders hell bent on personal objectives and fire pool shenanigans.
What must be even more injuring is the realisation that the DA have used the Mandela Message to show voters just how wrong and how far from the path of righteousness the ANC leadership have strayed.
The fact of the matter is that the ANC was founded upon a principle that was all inclusive with a clear goal of nation building only to have their leadership prostitute themselves and the party in the unholy worship of mammon.
The ANC is part of our shared history and it is up to all of us to ensure that it survives this crisis which has become one that all citizens share. Solving this crisis in a proper manner will help the ANC to belatedly help in ensuring a “Better life for all!”
