Transnet tugs and fire-fighters are currently battling a blaze aboard a cargo ship that has anchored in Algoa Bay.
Smoke can be seen billowing from the ship with Transnet tug boats assisting.
Sources who are assisting with the fire maintain that it appears the fire erupted on the mid-section of the vessel.
Port Elizabeth Harbour Master, Captain Brynn Adamson – who is currently out at the ship – confirmed that his team was assisting with the fire fighting operation. “We are still assessing the situation and are assisting where we can”
Adamson added that the vessel has 21 crew members of which non-essential personnel have been evacuated.
“Transnet National Ports Authority fire fighters as well as other members on board are assisting.” he added.
South African Maritime Safety Authority is also on board assessing and monitoring.
