Dear Ward 1 Residents
To say that the year has flown by is an understatement, especially so since I was elected to Council in April this year. The year has not been without it’s challenges, but the Ward office is functioning well – thanks to the efficient Secretaries who assist me, namely Vee De Andrade Anneen van Rooyen.
Thank you for all your support during the past year, as I have endeavoured to serve you, in addition to the many people I have met and had dealings with. The ward office will be operating on a skeleton staff over Christmas and New Year. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require assistance during this time or call 0800 20 50 50. On behalf of the staff of Ward 1 we extend Christmas Greetings to you and yours.
Proposed Fish Farm Project
You will have read in the media regarding the proposed siting of the Fish Farm, just off Pollock Beach. We do not believe that the siting of such a project just off the main beaches in PE is a good idea and request that you record your disapproval by visiting the www.stoppefishfarm.co.za site to register your vote against the proposal.
Nelson Mandela Metro University Taxi Rank
I have had a proactive meeting with the Vice Chancellor and the Management team of NMMU regarding the anticipated expansion of the varsity, in addition to the relocation of the taxi rank on the corner of Gomery Ave University Way. The latter challenge is receiving attention and hopefully will be resolved early in the new year.
Summerstrand Residents Association
These meetings have recommenced and will be held on a quarterly basis at the Rendezvous, Pearson High School. The next meeting will be held in January 2015. The removal of a section of the walkway has been undertaken and it is as popular as ever. The remaining section is to be upgraded in due course. Pavement along Admiralty Way from Spar to Kock Street.
I have requested the Metro to repair the pavement at the entrance to the Spar as well as lay a pavement from the Spar to Kock street.
Off Campus Student Accommodation
We are all aware of the challenge relating to student accommodation and in particular overcrowding and noisy students, I am a member of a committee set up by the Metro to draft By-laws to regulate same. The By-law is expected to go before Council early in the new year.
Mount Pleasant Primary School
During the year the Metro constructed a Drop Off area adjacent to the school which has assisted parents when dropping off and fetching their children.
Plans are being discussed with a view to upgrading Kelly’s Vlei as well as cleaning up the area adjacent to the vlei.
Speed humps have been constructed along Boundary Lane to slow the traffic down. Additional refuse bins have also been placed next to the lake. Plans are also being discussed to clean up the area around the lake to make it more attractive. Thank you to all the Boundary Lane residents who take pride in keeping the area along the lake clean / the lawns cut.
Sardinia Bay Car Park
The sand dunes have almost entirely taken over the parking area to this wonderful beach. Plans are at an advanced stage to open up a parking area, approximately 1km from the existing car park to accommodate 150 cars.
The car park will link up with the existing wooden walkway down to the beach, which will make a pleasant walk to the beach. It is envisaged that the new car park will be opened by mid 2015.
The Metro has cleaned up the roads in the suburb and it is much neater. The plots are to be cleaned next.
The first house is in the process of being built with more to follow shortly.
Kindly refrain from using these plots as dumping areas. Lets be proud of the suburbs in which we live.
The Sacremento Monument which is a landmark, is in need of restoration. Notwithstanding the fact that it is the Metro’s responsibility to undertake this work, this has not been forthcoming. The restoration of the monument will commence in the new year and the work will be financed by the Ward 1 Councillor’s Discretionary Fund.
Integrated Development Plan (IDP)
We are starting to draft the IDP, or better known in business as a Capital Plan, for the ensuing year commencing July 2015. If you have any suggestions as to capital projects which you feel should be undertaken, kindly email your suggestions to me.
Municipal Elections 2016
The Municipal elections are scheduled to be held in 2016 and we are starting the process to ensure that everyone living in Ward 1 is correctly registered, as you will only be able to vote where you are registered. The easiest way to verify your registration is to sms your ID # to 32810. You will receive a reply stating you where you are currently registered. We will also be making contact with all the Ward 1 residents early in the new year to update our records – so expect a call from us.
