In the early hours of this morning a home attached to a Walmer creche that receives assistance from the Walmer Angels burned completely to the ground. Fortunately no lives were lost.
The fire started in the kitchen and spread through the entire house destroying it and the contents. The caretaker and her charges that sleep over escaped with their lives into the cold dawn in the nick of time.
The Walmer Angel Project is an NPO that founded by Glenda Brunette, who serves as the Executive Director, and who is a well-known businesswoman in Port Elizabeth. The creche that has been destroyed is the thirteenth of twenty-nine that the Walmer Angel Project supports and works with in the Walmer Location.
Walmer Angels Board Member Alice Makochieng says; “The creche itself where the children learn is a few meters away and was not burnt. The creche owner opens her home to house some of the very poor kids who sleep there with a Caretaker – a young lady who also doubles up as a helper in creche during the day. There were more than eight people in the home at the time of the fire – all of whom escaped, but with only the clothes on their backs.”
“When Glenda Mrs Belinda Wolf and I rushed to the scene around 9:45am this morning to assess the damage and help, we found that the structure was completely gone and only a few corrugated iron sheets had been salvaged. Fortunately, Glenda had received a good donation of blankets, as part of Walmer Angel Networks’ Warm Winter Drive from Deloitte PE last week which were supplied to the Creche this morning. However, as you can imagine, with nothing left, they still need more assistance. Walmer Angel will taking more items and supplies to them tomorrow morning and in the rest of the week,” continued Makochieng.
The children will now be housed with neighbours and in the creche itself. The owner sleeps in the creche in order to safe guard the valuables in it. With the cold snap the children will need urgent accommodation. One of the children has TB and only started medication last week which could affect the willingness of a family to house that child.
