At the risk of being branded an old fart I must say that if I had taken part in any such protest my Old Man would have yanked me out of University and ‘allowed’ me to work at digging trenches for a living – as a wise Vice Chancellor once told me; “Studying at University is a right and if we had to allow our students to pass easily we would be doing our country a gross disservice” – or something along those lines.
But, times change and leaders grow weak………

Blade Nzimande addresses the media on university fee increase
Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has called an urgent media briefing to address the university fee increase debacle. This as protests over tution fees have since spilled over to the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University in Grahamstown. Rhodes students have abandoned talks with vice chancellor Sizwe Mabizela after no agreement was reached on a decrease in students’ Minimum Initial Payment before registration. Rhodes Fees Must Fall- Update
During the day the students marched to Eastcape Midlands College to be in Solidarity for the reduction of fees. Therefore students from Rhodes University and Midlands joined forces and came into campus to continue the protest. They were later briefed on the way forward and will later have a debriefing at 3pm and later march to the Drodsty Lawns.
Hundreds of Rhodes University students stopped traffic in Grahamstown as they marched to join their peers at Eastcape Midlands College who are also protesting against proposed fee hikes.
