The suburb of Bethelsdorp was formally surveyed in January 1879 and in 1878 legal title to the land was first given. Garden plots next to the Chatty River which subsequently become known as Kleinskool and Veeplaas were also made available, as well as plots alongside the salt pan at Missionvale.
In 1879 Kleinskool, Veeplaas and Missionvale were laid out.
The name Veeplaas derives from the original usage of the area as a cattle farm possibly owned by Frederick Korsten.
Veeplaas has a reputation as a depressed area but has number of luminaries that come from it’s dusty streets, one of which is the DJ, Heavy K, whose real name is Mkhululi Siqula, who says the “K” comes from his childhood nickname “Khusta”.
He was born and bred in Veeplaas in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, and attended Mzimhlophe Public Primary School, Emfundweni Primary School and later Ndzondelelo Secondary School.
