A number of disgruntled workers from the Department of Transport in Port Elizabeth protested on Wednesday outside their offices along Govan Mbeki Avenue.
The protesters, allied with the National Health Education and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) and Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU), said that they have had enough of Eastern Cape MEC of Transport, Weziwe Tikana’s mismanagement of the department.
Several protesters carried placards written ‘Tikana your time is up’.
While the protestors refused formal interviews with RNews, this correspondent observed a member of the group, who seemed to lead the protest, repeatedly shout; “Forward with the workers’ rights… forward… down with the management”.
The protesters accused MEC Tikana of making irregular management appointments in the department and a heavy budget for the scholar transportation programme.
They claimed that the MEC had allocated around R450 million for the recruitment of new staff this financial year with most of the new workers being hired because of their loyalty to the African National Congress (ANC) and to her as an individual.
