Two primary school children were killed when they were hit by a eight ton truck shortly after lunchtime this afternoon.
Police spokesman, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, said Bulelani Ndarhala and Siviwe Mbetshi, both aged 10, had apparently run out in front of the truck at around 1.15pm this afternoon.
The children had just left Ankervas Primary School, which had just closed for the day.
“The truck driver was travelling along the Rocklands Road from Uitenhage to Port Elizabeth, and was approaching the school, when the children ran out in front of him,” she said.
She said the driver had told police that he had not been able to stop the vehicle in time, and could not swerve as there were more children on the side of the road to his left and there was a car coming towards him on his right.
She said a case of culpable homicide had been opened and was being investigated.
