Eastern Province Rugby have confirmed that pre-season preparations began on Monday, 16 November 2015 with a practice session at Sardinia Bay. Training focused on establishing fitness levels and included a game of touch rugby. The program for the rest of the week will focus on strength and conditioning training.
“Despite the trying circumstances the mood in the camp was positive. Management and players are aware of the current situation and have not allowed circumstances to impact on their pre-season preparations. All players were punctual and professional. The new players were welcomed and made to feel part of the team, and all team members were given the chance to socialise and get to know each other,” said Olga Williams from EP Rugby Marketing and Public Relations.
EP Rugby have confirmed the following nine players joining the Eastern Province Kings as part of their pre-season training squad:
- SP Marais
- James Hiltebrand
- Jurgen Visser
- Stefan Watermeyer
- JC Roos
- Caylib Oosthuizen
- Mark Richards
- Louis Fouche
- Carel Greef
Two players, namely Luther Obi and Sylvian Mahuza, have given notice of their intent to leave the Kings.
They join loose forward Tim Agaba, centre Tim Whitehead and prop Lizo Gqoboka who last week informed the union of their intent to leave.
Financial issues have meant that the Kings have not paid players, staff or administrators for October.
Due to the Kings’ failure to compensate their players, the South African Rugby Players Association (SARPA) has informed the players of their right to leave the union.
SARPA had also advised those who do not have alternative employment offers that they were not obligated to return to training on Monday.
