The Route 67 Walking Tour is a guided walking tour in Port Elizabeth of 67 Public Artworks symbolising Nelson Mandela’s 67 Years of political life, work and dedication to the struggle for freedom.
Tours start at the Campanile moving up to Vuysile Mini Square, along the to the St. Mary’s Cathedral to view the beautiful stained glass Windows. From there up via the St Mary’s and mosaic stairs to the Voting Line and Flag on the Donkin. Time is given to view all the pieces of Art on the Donkin. En-route view the 67 Mandela Quotes which are all transcribed into Beaded Artworks “Conversations with the Queen”. From the Donkin Reserve we move to the Anthenaneum to view a number of statues of struggle Heroes and then onto Fort Frederick where we finish the tour.
The Red Location Museum has been closed for the past 19 months, due to political impasse and does not presently form part of the tour.
The Route 67 Walking Tour endeavours to enlighten the citizens of and visitors to PE of the history and culture the stories and anecdotes of Port Elizabeth by highlighting some of the beautiful treasures that exist in our City.
The tour is open to all citizens and visitors of all ages whilst being adapted to the requirements of the group, students or visitors subject to their special interests.
Schools from grade 4 to 12, as well as educational training for all Tour Guides, Tourism Students, and Tour Ambassadors can do the tour FREE OF CHARGE.
The tour can be conducted in English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa and takes a minimum of two hours which can be extended to four hours depending on the requirements of the group or individual.
The following 2015 rates apply:
- All School Tours, Tourism Students and Training Guides are Free of Charge.
- Single Person – R100.00
- 2 to 3 – R90.00 per person
- 4 to 5 – R80.00 per person
- 6 to 10 – R70.00 per person
- Groups – R1200.00 / 30 (R40.00 per person)
Tours operate from Monday to Saturday including Public Holidays and start at 09h00, 12h00, and 15h00
