Food explorers can take their taste buds on a tour of titillating Mexican flavours at The Boardwalk’s Bayside Pantry in March. A fusion of indigenous Mesoamerican cooking, European and Spanish elements, Mexican cuisine is a festival of cheesy, spicy, lime, vegetable, and meaty flavours.
The Mexican Buffet at The Bayside Pantry fuses the colour and sensational flavour of traditional Mexican favourites, from empanadas; cheese and jalapeño quesadillas, and peppered mackerel to nachos; pork tacos with black bean, and baked ground beef enchiladas.
“Many people that Mexican food is hot and heavy but this is not the case. It is diverse and exciting fare, with a variety of textures and fresh tastes. Herbs and spices that give Mexican food its characteristic flavour are chilies and coriander. However, there are also refreshing notes of lime, lemon and oregano in the mix.
“There is something on our buffet for everyone, even those who aren’t espceically inclined to hot or spicy food,” says Siphokazi, the PR and Promotions Manager at The Boardwalk.
According to her, The Bayside Pantry’s Mexican features various stations where guests are free to explore hot and cold dishes – depending on their taste. There are three traditional Mexican soups to sample to start, followed by the salad station where diners can create their own salads. There is another salad station featuring ready-prepared, traditional salad dishes. The carvery station includes Mexican-style meat dishes as well as hot vegetables. Perhaps one of the most exciting is the hot pot station where there is an array of hearty stews such as red chili and pork stew; mole chicken casserole; birria Mexican beef stew with tomato, onion and cilantro, and lamb birria.
The dessert station features a mouthwatering selection of sweet delights including lemon lime mousse; basil panna cotta; peach enchilada rolls; orange coffee flan, and bionico.
The Mexican Buffet is available during March between 18h00 and 22h00 on Wednesdays. The cost is R160 per person. Booking is essential.
