Three people were hacked and injured during an ANC infighting in Port Elizabeth today. The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro is plagued with political tensions and Mayor Zanoxolo Wayile and regional chair Nceba Faku are at loggerheads over control of the metro.
Supporters of both men clashed violently, resulting in shacks being torched. Residents understood to be aligned to former metro mayor Nceba Faku were evicted forcefully. The protagonists also tried to attack an SABC camera crew.
Earlier this month, Mayor Wayile was allegedly held hostage and asked to resign. His supporters broke down the door to ANC headquarters and freed him. Last week, Congress of South African Trade Unions in the region marched to voice its dissatisfaction about the infighting.
Faku says both the municipality, in the context of being a local government, as well as the police must come in to simply enforce the law. He says both the provincial and national ANC structures are working to restore stability in the region.
Mayor Wayile expressed his shock at today’s developments.
