Beach enthusiasts are hoping that the summer weather comes soon as they prepare for the 3rd round of the popular aQuellé Ocean Racing Series which takes place this Sunday morning at Hobie Beach.
Unique to Nelson Mandela Bay, the Series appeals to families in that it offers them an opportunity to take part in any one of six exciting sports events on the same morning. Included in the listing is a 2km and 1km Ocean Swim, 3km Stand-up Paddle, 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and the Kids (12 years and under) 1km Beach Run/Walk.
Leading the challenge in the Ocean Swim events, and keen to get back into the water after Round 2 was cancelled because of poor weather, are some of the Provinces top open water swimmers and triathletes with the biggest names to watch on Sunday being Jason Jones and Brigitte Muller in the 1km swim and Daniel Jones, Bradley Reen, Kirsten Marriott and Amica de Jager in the 2km Ocean Swim.
On the beach, it’s 15 year old Dylan Finlay who is dominating the 5km beach run having won both of the previous race days. Whilst over 100 children will be expected to contest the Kids 1km beach run with kids from as young as 2 years already taking part this season.
Entries on Sunday morning are open from 7.30am at Hobie Beach with racing starting at 9am and followed by lucky draw prize giving immediately after the last participants finish. Over R5,000 in lucky draw prizes up for grabs including the feature prize of R1,000 cash.
