Theodor Herzl Primary School pupils acknowledged the plight of hungry children everywhere by launching its ‘love sandwiches’ project on World Hunger Day, Wednesday, 28 May.
Theodor pupils and their mums have pledged to pop an extra ‘sarmie’, some fruit or juice into their lunchboxes once a week, all of which will be collected and distributed to those less fortunate in Walmer township. Thanks to the compassionate response to the call for donations on Wednesday, more than 100 hungry tummies enjoyed a healthy lunch that day – and were no doubt able to concentrate more fully and play with more energy for a while.
According to FoodBank South Africa, 20% of South Africans do not have access to sufficient food, and that includes millions of children.
