I, Michael Grobler, would like to let people know what my girlfriend and I experienced on 24 November at around 2:00 pm.
We went for lunch at the Bay Leaf Coffee Shop in Metlife Plaza, Port Elizabeth and sat at the outside tables. Whilst we were eating 3 African men sat at the table next to us. My girlfriend’s handbag was behind us under the seat. One guy got up and fetched a jacket from his car. Then they pulled the bag towards them, threw the jacket over it and passed it from one to the next under the table and go up and left.
This was all caught on the CCTV camera system in the coffee shop. The centre does not have any cameras. We experienced great support from other clients and the owners of the coffee shop but things weren’t the same at the Kabega Park police station where we went to report the crime.
At the Kabega Park SAPS, the staff looked half asleep and were not very interested in assisting us. I took along a bottle of water, which the suspects had left behind, for fingerprints, only to be told the SAPS could do nothing with it. After 3 attempts at making a written a statement (due to spelling mistakes) my girlfriend tore up the statement and said; “Don’t bother”, to which came the response; “Oh GOD thank you, now you can get out here”.
When I mentioned the CCTV footage I was told it must wait until Monday when a detective has the case. Regardless to say nothing has been done now and according to security and car guards at the centre these guys are known criminals who work in a Syndicate.
I would like people to know about this and to be aware.
