The Winged Foot Gives Way to Africa

A new tyre range offers high performance engineering with the latest technologies from Europe, fine tuned to meet Africa’s uniquely robust and demanding conditions, and manufactured to international quality standards right here in Uitenhage, South Africa.

Local production of this advanced, environmentally friendly tyre began at the end of last year and EfficientGrip South Africa was launched this summer.

Goodyear Manager, Consumer and Commercial Tyres, Robert Harris, said the range had been engineered in Europe “specifically for Africa and is being proudly built right here in Uitenhage, hence the logo of the continent on the sidewall of the tyre.

“EfficientGrip meets all the criteria for strict Goodyear quality standards, but for the African market we have adopted its technologically advanced design elements and made changes to the construction to create a more robust, high performance, hybrid tyre that really works for our local customer requirements.

“It offers a fresh look on the current line up of Excellence and NCT5 tyres, which have reached the end of their life cycle and will no longer be produced for retail in EfficientGrip’s six sizes.”

Adaptations for Africa’s challenging conditions have made the tyre even stronger than its European counterpart, to ensure better tread wear and mileage despite our more challenging terrain.

As part of Goodyear South Africa’s Product Introduction Programme for the EfficientGrip ZA, various key elements were identified for evaluation and testing. The results of these tests, both independent and in-house, highlighted the superior performance of the EfficientGrip ZA against its competitors
and predecessors across a variety of performance areas.

Volkswagen test engineer Paul Quinn, the ride and handling specialist responsible for release of original fitment tyres, had this to say after testing the tyres on the Gerotek Facility; “I liked the EfficientGrip tyres. The overall impression was that the tyres had very good steering response and were comfortable and quiet with very good wet grip together with safe and predictable dry handling.”
