I took my 6 year old niece and her friend to the PE aquarium today and was rather shocked at how bored I was.
We use to go to the aquarium as kids and we use to be entertained, I loved it and the main attraction, dolphins. I know that one of the stars ‘Frisbee’ died and the rest were shipped off to Hong Kong where Domino has fathered one new born. They were shipped out in 2008 on a breeding loan and because of the deteriorating state of the facility as well as sufficient funding for up keeping infrastructure, lets go with the latter.
If you go on to the website, which was updated in 2013, still mention of dolphins and the snake park that I did not see, so what’s with that?
So all you have is a live Seal show which lasts for about 5 minutes with an expressionless host vomiting out her parrot speech. You have a area for penguins in the corner and there are two tortoises swimming in the Seals swimming pool. That is it for the outside area. When you go inside there is a few fish tanks with a range of little fish and tortoises ect, not very eye catching either. If you look over the wall where the dolphins use to run the show, still exactly the same, no water in pools and just another eyesore.
I paid R85 for the kids and myself, they took a photo of us as we entered which cost R100, yes R100.
The show had not even ended and my niece said that she was bored and wanted to go to Mcdonalds instead, case closed. If you cant captivate a child, you are doing it wrong.
My question is, who owns this? Does it survive solely on donations or is it owned by the City?
Its really sad if you can remember what it used to look like compared to now.
