Singer, songwriter and performer Melvyn Matthews has shared the stage with international stars such as The Manhattans and Stevie Wonder as well as local stars such as Mbongeni Ngema and many of the talented musicians South Africa boasts of.
Melvyn left his home town of Port Elizabeth as teenager in 1982 in search of success, fame and fortune in the city of lights Johannesburg. He began singing for groups such as The Family in Johannesburg. He was the original lead singer for iconic groups such as Pure Magic which later was fronted by Vuyo Mokoena and Rebecca Malope and was lead singer of Dr Victor the Rasta Rebels. He later joined The Big Dudes and was a lead singer with Benda Fassie. It was in 1983 that he penned the hit that catapulted Brenda Fassie the late great Fassie to fame! It was also during this time that Melvyn composed another iconic follow up hit ‘Life Is Going On’ which has also later been recorded by Sibongile Khumalo. Melvyn also wrote for another S.A music legend Steve Kekana.
In 1985 released his self titled debut album ‘Melvyn’ followed by ‘Mind your own business’ in 1989. An immense talent who can belt out any tune in any genre and puts any vocalist to shame with his big, controlled powerful performances, Melvyn is a joy to watch and experience!
