Would you drive an 11 horsepower car with no gearbox, no gears, no driveshaft, no traditional brakes and no fossil fuel?
If you answered no then you may change your mind when you hear that Riversimple, based in Llandrindod Wells, Powys, Wales, designed a radically new car (the Rasa) which emits nothing but a tiny amount of water and will do the equivalent of 250 mpg. Charging takes 3 minutes, and the range is 300 miles.
Over two rounds of crowdfunding Riversimple have raised a Total Funding Amount of £2.2 Million.
They are building a fundamentally new form of business system that aligns their interests with customers, suppliers and the environment in support of the statement that there is no trade off between profit and purpose.
According to Riversimple founder, Hugo Spowers; “The critical thing is that we don’t sell the car, we will never ever sell the car, we will only sell a service contract.”
“Our model is very similar to a mobile phone contract with a fixed monthly cost and a milegae usage rate,” clarified Spowers.
Riversimple’s model is based on a simple strategy that recognises that traditional motor vehicle manufacturers are ‘rewarded’ for producing cars with high obsolescence which maximises resource consumption. In the business case for Riversimple they will only ever sell a service contract and irt is critical that it covers all the options and operating costs including fuel use.
The business model translates into ‘forcing’ Riversimple to ensure the longevity, low maintenance build and fuel efficiency of their hydrogen/electric hydrid two seater.
“We have a shared interest with customers and suppliers to provide the most cost effective vehicle that we can,” says Spowers.
The green movement is focused on maximising the use of resources in a sustainable way that doesn’t harm the planet so Riversimple may be onto something here.
Riversimple is aiming to offer customers the first affordable, hassle free, fun-to-drive eco car, delivered as a complete and cost-transparent service.
