Newly elected mayor of the Göterborg city in Sweden will be leading a high-powered delegation to the Nelson Mandela Bay municipality this week.
Mandela Bay spokesperson Kupido Baron said Göterborg mayor Anneli Hulthen would be accompanied by her city’s director for international affairs to Port Elizabeth. “The key purpose of the visit is to sign an extension of the partnership contract between the two cities.”
The original partnership agreement was signed on November 22, 1999. The agreement is for cooperation in the fields of education, culture, sports and economic development.
In the past few years, the cooperation agreement was in terms of the urban renewal projects, including the one in Motherwell and Helenvale into which Sweden, through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, injected millions.
Baron said mayor Zanoxolo Wayile and his Göterborg counterpart would sign the partnership agreement at the City Hall on Monday.
