Statement by Samuel Davids, Chairman of Stella Damons ANC branch, regarding the storming of ANC offices by DA members this morning.
Approximately 30 DA members – dressed in blue T-shirts with the party logo on it, stormed the offices of the Stella Damons branch on Thursday morning, 2 May.
The attackers falsely accused administrators in the ANC office of being responsible for recent service delivery protest actions in Helenvale against the DA Ward Councillor. One of the administrators was attacked with sticks.
They further claimed that the ANC is responsible for stopping work at a municipal project on Monday (29 April).
We strongly deny the allegations made by the DA as the protesters were members of the community and possibly from different political persuasions. I made it clear at the meeting that the incidents of violence regarding work opportunities in the area cannot continue at this rate.
Judging by the violence, it is clear that the Ward Councillor cannot handle the employment of residents responsibly. The Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality must take these projects over to avoid a possible bloodbath emanating from the violent protests.
We heard rumours that the DA in the area demand party membership applications before employing desperate residents at government projects of the ANC-led municipality.
A case of violence and intimidation was opened at the Gelvandale South African Police Services.
