Spur IRONKIDS has launched their campaign, Spur Mini Hero, to raise awareness of the IRONMAN 4 the Kids Charity Trust, which is the official charity of the Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship.
The IRONMAN 4 the Kids Charity Trust was established by ex-Springbok Garth Wright and Gary Stephenson who took on the challenge to raise funds for the kids of the Eastern Cape. The charity started in 2005 and their goal was to raise R11 000. Now 12 years later and their goal is 2 Million Rand, to support the 21 charities associated with the trust.
The IRONMAN African Championship and Spur IRONKIDS events both take place on the first weekend of April, with Spur IRONKIDS happening on Saturday 1 April and IRONMAN on Sunday 2 April 2017. Each Spur IRONKIDS participant, between the ages of 6 and 13 years old, will swim 100m and run 1.2km, crossing the same finish line as the IRONMAN athletes on Hobie Beach, Port Elizabeth.
The race focuses more on participation than actual results as no finishing times are taken, each little one’s success being more about how much fun they have. Every child also receives a T-shirt, medal, finisher photo and goodie bag to round off a great day of activities. Spur hopes to keep the junior athletes active and inspired to develop their passion for multi-disciplinary sports.
The Spur IRONKIDS competition is open to all children between the ages of 6 and 13 years living in the Eastern Cape, and all who have entered the Spur IRONKIDS 2017 race are encouraged to share their stories of what hero they want to be when they grow up. The top 10 stories will be chosen, and each winner will receive a R500 Spur voucher and a free entry into the 2018 Spur IRONKIDS race. One overall winner will be chosen from the top 10 to hand over a R10 000 cheque to any one of the IRONMAN 4 the Kidz charities of their choice and be featured on TV.
The campaign brings together not only Spur’s philosophy of participation and an active, healthy lifestyle but also that anyone can participate and take part in multi-discipline events. It is also an opportunity for the children to be someone else’s hero.
The campaign launches on 25 November 2016 and closes on 3 March 2017.
