In the park opposite our home we have a Spotted Thick-knee (Burhinus capensis/Gewone Dikkop/Kaptriel) dynasty that have been there since we moved in in 1999. Their distinctive warning cry is used by our dogs to spot people walking in the park – I suppose you could say that in the abscence of our owning a ‘stoep k*ker ball of fluff’ the Thick-knees are a welcome addition to our natural defences as they often wake the dogs up.
This morning was one of the first that they allowed me to get very close to them before they jumped off our boundary wall and returned to the park.
