With Ironman and the Two Oceans event around the corner, registered dietitian Karlien Smit and official Ironman physician Dr Konrad von Hagen will be the speakers at a Sport Nutrition Symposium hosted by The Association of Dietetics in South Africa’s Eastern Cape branch together with Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Dietetics Department on Thursday, 3 April 2014.
Karlien Smit has worked with various national sport teams, including Kaizer Chiefs, Nashua Cape Cobras, SA Canoeing, SA under-16 rugby team, Cycling SA and the SA Paralympic teams, as well as individuals training for ultra-endurance events such as Iron Man and the Cape Epic.
Smit will talk about new concepts in sport nutrition such as “training low, competing high”, but will also include topics such as “Should we eat carbohydrates for performance in endurance training?”, and updates on protein intake with specific reference to resistance training.
Dr Von Hagen will talk about the use of sport supplements.
Dietetics lecturer and chairperson of the Association of Dietetics in South Africa’s Eastern Cape branch Esmarie van Tonder says there is so much confusion in the media about what is the right diet to follow when training.
“These leading experts will give healthy messages surrounding sport nutrition to the public.”
Anyone interested in sport nutrition is welcome to attend the symposium at NMMU‘s South Campus Auditorium at 17:00 for 17:30.
