Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has appointed a task team to sort out Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan’s financial crisis.
The move comes after the ratepayers association threatened to withold rates while the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Business Chamber called for the dissolution of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan due to the protracted political instability.
The metro has also been hit with service delivery protests as residents demand better houses and proper services.
Minister Gordhan and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Lechesa Tsenoli met with representatives in the metro in Port Elizabeth on Monday in a bid to resolve the struggling metro’s issues.
“We ensured, as the two Ministers, that we will set up a team with the city to review some of the ratios on finances and make sure the city continues to progress in the right direction in terms of financial viability,” Gordhan was quoted as saying by the SABC.
