On Saturday afternoon 7 June 2014 at approximately 15h10 a fishing outing to Swartkops river turned into a disaster that, luckily, didn’t become a tragedy.
Members of the Get Hooked fishing club were socialising at The Hook and Reel Angling Club and noticed a small cabin boat leaving Tiger Bay on a fishing outing.
They commented to each other that the boat was laying fairly low in the water with 2 people on board, and it wasn’t long when some of the members realised the boat was sinking.
Quick thinking Get Hooked members quickly launched one of their own boats and rushed to assist the people from the sinking boat.
On arrival, they saw the people on the sinking boat had managed to beach the flooded cabin boat on a mud bank in the mouth to Tiger Bay.
No-one was injured, and the people from the ‘submarine’ declined help saying they had forgotten to put in the drain plug, and the rescue boat returned to the club.
Not 15 minutes later the little boat was in trouble again. This time heading bow first under water to a 5 meter drop off on the outside of Tiger Bay.
Again a member of Get Hooked rushed to their aid and towed/ dragged the boat and its crew to safety, while onlookers watched the sport.
The boat was flooded, equipment damaged, both crew members soaked but alive and ‘slightly’ embarrassed.
