CAPE TOWN – South African Football Association (Safa) President Kirsten Nematandani on Monday praised Bafana Bafana after reaching the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Bafana came from behind to draw 2-2 with Morocco on Sunday night to book their place in the last eight and topping Group A ahead of Cape Verde.
Bafana will play on Saturday evening against a quarterfinal opponent to be decided tonight.
Nematandani said the team showed fighting spirit like that of champions.
“We need to congratulate coach Gordon Igesund and the boys for the commitment and courage that they displayed.”
Nematandani said it was a major relief making it through the group stages.
“They are now in the quarterfinal and anything is possible. Who knows they might be in the final and that’s what we’re all rooting for now.”
Meanwhile, Bafana supporters also took to social networks to express their joy.
Sarah Britten wrote “Manufacturers of anti-depressants will sleep a little sadder tonight. #Bafana”
@joeyisstilakid tweeted “Good morning tweeps a beautiful day all thanks to GI #Bafana are through to the quarterfinals. It was not a dream after all.”
Tonight, Niger will take on Ghana at Nelson Mandela Bay at 7pm.
In the another clash, the DRC will play Mali at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 7pm.
