Round 2: Panayiotou to make second bail attempt
Advocate Mike Hellens takes centre stage as he tries to get Jayde Panayiotou’s husband released on bail.
CAPE TOWN – Senior advocate Mike Hellens will take centre stage today as he tries to get alleged wife killer Christopher Panayiotou released on bail.
Panayiotou recruited Hellens after his initial bail bid failed.
He is accused of hiring two men to kidnap and kill his wife Jayde earlier this year.
Panayiotou has been held at St Albans Prison since shortly after his arrest.
Jayde was kidnapped from outside her apartment complex while waiting for a lift to work.
It’s round two of Panayiotou’s bid to be released on bail.
Magistrate Abigail Beeton last month denied the accused bail, saying he’s a flight risk who did not disclose to court his dual citizenship between South Africa and Cyprus.
Panayiotou’s lawyers maintain they never deemed it necessary for him to disclose this.
His legal counsel consisting of well-known advocates Terry Price and Hellens will once again have to convince the court why the alleged murderer has to be released on bail.
