Put politics aside to aid community
ON Thursday February 23, I put an urgent matter to the NMB council at a full council meeting.

PIET Naude sucks. His asinine articles are the worst I’ve ever read in The Herald in more than 40 years. Do we deserve his banal broeder banter?
Skype reports prove effective
I MUST disagree with Leon Muston’s criticism of Antony and Cleopatra (“Ambitious tech lets play down”, February 17).
Fire victims in dire need of food, clothing
MY domestic worker was one of the people who lost everything in the fire on Sunday in Walmer Township. They have received minimal help – they’ve been given stale bread and stale fried chips to eat.

Bhisho must improve recruitment
WITH reference to the article “EC battles to retain service delivery skills”, February 20, the issue of the Eastern Cape losing skills is far-fetched. Most of the people from the Eastern Cape do want to come back and use the skills they have acquired for the advancement of the province.
Follow due process in firing metro officials
IT is with great glee that I find Leon de Villiers agreeing with at least two of the points made in my letter (“Investigate Faku for wasteful spending”, February 23). By the way Leon, we, as ratepayers, are also paying for the mayor’s alarm system at his house and the petrol his guards are using in hired cars which we are also paying for.
Appalled by violence against woman
ON Friday, the headlines of The Herald exposed yet another cruel rape in Port Elizabeth (“Elderly Bay woman raped”). The DA Women’s Network (Dawn) is appalled by this crime and all gender violence that reduces women to victims and commodities.
Campaign not in best interests of residents
I HAVE been interested to note that our Ward 8 councillor is actively campaigning against the proposed development of the vacant property adjacent to the Apple Express rail/road crossing in Lorraine and behind the Kragga Kamma Road KwikSpar. I can only wonder at the thought process which leads him in that direction.
State-owned enterprises fail environment
SINCE before 2008, the ANC controlled Nelson Mandela Bay Metro environmental initiatives has repeatedly failed to address its “… most pressing concerns related to the levels of toxic dust from the manganese ore terminal (Transnet port terminals) and uncontained leaks from the oil tank farm (Shell) – both of which failed to meet health and safety requirements”.
Disaster as Swartkops River fouled again
JUST as the Markman Canal was really looking much better after last year’s breakdown of both the Studebaker and Aloes pump stations in Markman, it has happened once again.
ANC needs ‘critical medical help’
Aid for gutted community
ON Sunday afternoon, 21 shacks were burnt to ashes and more than 40 people left homeless in a fire.
Signage for stadium
OUR wonderful stadium is extremely difficult to find unless you are a local Mandela Bay resident.
Touchy land question must be laid to rest
DEPUTY Minister of Agriculture Dr Pieter Mulder must apologise for his statement on the land question to avoid racial problems between whites and blacks.
Buy local to retain EC jobs
AMID all the head-scratching debates, arguments and emotion about the country’s No1 issue, job creation, the government buys fleets of vehicles from companies with absolutely no manufacturing footprint in South Africa. Examples are the Eastern Cape health department and the NMB Municipality.

Performs above set standard
THE statement that NMMU ranks fifth out of 23 universities in research success requires further clarification (“Research boost for university”, February 23).
Wind power proves expensive
REFERRING to the awarding “hero of the day” in The Herald of February 6, for the R93-billion wind farms plan, let the following be known:
Would gladly do job for half the salary
ONCE again, I am forced to respond to the utter nonsense gurgled by Leon de Villiers (“Investigate Faku for wasteful spending”, February 23).
Stop whingeing and work for SA
IT is such a sad situation when politics and financial security are entwined. You find there are people who flee the country claiming to be victims of “crime”.
Support for military veterans under new act
IN 1994 the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was formed as a result of the integration of the former enemies, the statutory and non-statutory forces: Bophuthatswana Defence Force, Ciskei Defence Force, Transkei Defence Force, South African Defence Force, Azanian Peoples Liberation Army and Umkhonto We Sizwe.
Bridge hole needs to be fixed urgently
THE road that leads to Perseverance, Despatch and Uitenhage, bypassing the Redhouse and New Brighton turnoffs is well travelled every day, and will eventually be impassable if maintenance does not take place immediately!
Use cows to ‘mow’ the grass
I JUST couldn’t help but stop on Struandale Road on Wednesday afternoon to take pictures of cattle keeping the long overgrown grass on the verge short.

Dad well cared for
MY late dad was very fortunate to live for the last 13 years at the Echo Foundation homes, Munro Kirk and later at Lapa Munnik.
hree seriously injured in crash
MY daughter is friends with one of the girls involved in the Samantha Way accident on Tuesday (“Charge tow operators for causing collision”, February 23). The occupants of the vehicle hit by the irresponsible tow truck driver were not just lightly injured.
Picture brightened day
THANK you for the beautiful picture on the front page of Tuesday’s Herald. In this world where death and destruction dominate the newspapers, it was so uplifting to see this picture of creatures that are usually abused, overladen and over worked.
Does race count in scarce skills training?
LISTENING to Pravin Gordhan deliver his budget speech, two things crossed my mind: taxpayers played their role and contributed to the country’s massive financial reserves and secondly, someone is going to fail the taxpayers!
