Reverend Father Murphy
Father Murphy, seated, and Bishop Moran.
Born in Ireland in 1812, Father Murphy came out to the colony with Dr Debereux and landed in Cape Town in 1838. Here Father Murphy received Holy Orders and it is said that he was the first Catholic Priest to be ordained in South Africa. Father Murphy was then immediately posted to the Frontier with Father Burke who passed away within one week of his arrival.
Father Murphy built St. Patrick’s Church on the corner of Beaufort and Hill Streets and was transferred to Port Elizabeth by Bishop Devereux in 1852.
