Port Elizabeth – The road from Burgersdorp to Aliwal-North is being upgraded.
The responsibility for the maintenance of National Route R58 was passed to the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) in April 2012. This road provides a regional link between the various smaller towns in the northern part of the Eastern Cape close to the border with the Free State as well as Lesotho.
The stretch of road covered by the contract commences just on the north-eastern outskirt of Burgersdorp and ends just before the route enters the peri-urban environment on the western side of Aliwal North. Specifically from km 1.0 to km 52.3.
SANRAL appointed a company to undertake what can best be described as a “patch and reseal” contract. The road is being repaired where required, resurfaced and new road markings and road studs will be installed. The contract commenced in October 2013 and will be complete by June 2014.
Motorists are advised to observe the advance warning signs, be aware of driving conditions through the deviations, and are requested to exercise extreme caution and patience when travelling through the construction work zone.
SANRAL apologises for the inconvenience caused during the construction period.
