Port Elizabeth – All eyes will be on the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Monday when the relative arrested in connection with the death of Port Elizabeth teacher Jayde Panayiotou, 29, will appear.
News of the arrest came to light last week. The man cannot be named until he appears in court and has been charged.
The family member is alleged to be the mastermind behind Panayiotou’s killing.
Police swooped on the suspect after he made contact with 31-year-old Luthando Siyoli, who allegedly pressurised the family member for more money following what police believe was a hit on Panayiotou.
Panayiotou’s killing sparked a huge public outcry from residents, who said they were fed up with crime in Port Elizabeth.
Eastern Cape police spokeswoman Brigadier Marinda Mills said no special arrangements had been made to deploy extra police officers at the court.
Top Port Elizabeth attorney Alwyn Griebenow confirmed that he was representing the relative arrested in connection with the murder. The suspect will apply to be released on bail.
Panayiotou’s body was found on a farm in Rocklands, near Uitenhage, on the morning of April 22. She had been shot in the head and upper body.
