Schools from the Eastern and Western Cape will descend on Redhouse Yacht Club this weekend for two days of fun and mayhem to contest the 39th Coca-Cola Eastern Cape Interschools Regatta on 7 and 8 March.
Sailors from outside of Port Elizabeth compete against each other in many classes and, best of all for many of them, get to camp in the club grounds which releases the schoolboy pranksters.
Race officials often arrive at the club to find various items of clothing flapping from the halyards before the start of races, sailors adopt strange hairstyles, sails refuse to budge, hearts are broken and many lifelong friendships are made.
Up to date 11 schools have entered and, as is normal in most competitions, many more are expected to enter on the day – as individuals or teams. School teams have already entered from Grahamstown, Port Elizabeth, Knysna and East London.
The 2014 Novice Fleet Winner, James Norman, from Lorraine Primary will be back to contest against the bigger sailors.
Also expected to compete are Glenwood House Primary’s, James Vonk, who won the 2014 Junior Fleet prize. Percy Mdala High School from Knysna were the overall winners of the High School Trophy in 2014 and will be a tough school to beat this year.
In the High School Tera class, Sanel Magqaza from Percy Mdala High will return.
Port Rex’s Morgan Rusch and Willy Alegra will be hoping to wing in the Mirror Class again this year whilst last year’s Open Class winner, Justin Harth, from Grey High School has also entered.
In 2012 YouTube user, waynesland, recorded some of the fun and mayhem dished out by pupils from East London:
waynesland also recorded some of the starts and sailing from the 2102 Redhouse Interschools (2102? I kid you not – look out for the banner in the video):
