Goodyear South Africa is set to launch its state of the art tyre production facility in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape on the 7th of November 2017. The R 1 Billion manufacturing facility employed the use of technology in order to meet the strong and growing market demand of high value-added (HVA) consumer tyres in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
The new technology and accompanying comprehensive employee training are to improve the plant’s capability and capacity to produce Low Rolling Resistance tyres that promote fuel economy in vehicles. This to meet the growing demand from vehicle manufacturers and the replacement market, as well as meet the increase in market requirements for HVA 4X4 SUV tyres.
The first tyre to be produced out of this state-of-the-art facility is the Wrangler All – Terrain Adventure tyre that is built with an ultra-strong, Kevlar® fiber overlay and reinforced by the Durawall™ Technology, which improves resistance against punctures and cuts in the sidewall area. Production of SUV’s and 4×4’s has become increasingly popular and has been rising sharply in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) since 2012. The Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure meets the demands of SUV/4×4 drivers wanting to enjoy both off-road and on-road driving pleasure.
The tyre market in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa is expected to experience double-digit growth through 2020 led by the consumer segment. Goodyear South Africa is officially unveiling its state-of -the-art facility to commence with production of HVA consumer tyres to meet the growing demand in the market.
“These changes are an integral part of our overall approach to align production capability and capacity with market demand, decrease complexity and reduce costs in our manufacturing operations. Our aim is to create a sustainable and competitive business over the long term that benefits our employees, customers, and ultimately the Uitenhage community at large”, concluded Jean-Jacques Wiroth, Managing Director, Goodyear South Africa.
