Join Port Elizabeth and MyPE in congratulating Mover and Shaker, Prof Rossouw von Solms from NMMU:
Prof Rossouw von Solms, director of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Institute for Information and Communication Technology Advancement (IICTA), is one of the country’s leading experts in information security.
Focusing specifically on the human aspects of information security, he is determined to instil a culture of e-safety through education, tackling such issues as safe banking habits, avoiding email scams, cyber-bullying and the risks associated with social networking sites like Facebook.
He is also spearheading a unique facial recognition programme for the elderly, which will replace the need for user-ID’s and passwords (which the elderly are apt to forget and unwisely write down), when using email, Skype and other Internet programmes – and is testing this programme within Port Elizabeth retirement villages.
Profesor Rossouw von Solms was honoured at a special event at the university on the evening of 5 November 2012 as a Distinguished Professor, and will maintain the special title for at least five years.
For the first time in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s history, five professors were recognised as Distinguished Professors in recognition of the significant contribution they have made within their field and to the university.
The five Distinguished Professors, selected by a screening committee, are; Mark Watson (psychology), Richard Cowling (botany), Rossouw von Solms (information technology), Bert Olivier (philosophy) and Danie Hattingh (automotive engineering).
