Professor of philosophy Bert Olivier has always strived to ask the uncomfortable questions that challenge the status quo, but ultimately aim at improving life for all.
Olivier’s research has earned him a number of awards, like that NMMU’s top researcher of the year award on several occasions. In addition to his awards from the university and the former UPE, he received the Stals Prize for Philosophy from the South African Academy for Arts and Sciences in 2004.
He is a regular contributor to Mail Guardian.
Professor Bert Olivier was honoured at a special event at the university on the evening of 5 November 2012 as a Distinguished Professors, and will maintain the special title for at least five years.
For the first time in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s history, five professors were recognised as Distinguished Professors in recognition of the significant contribution they have made within their field and to the university.
The five Distinguished Professors, selected by a screening committee, are; Mark Watson (psychology), Richard Cowling (botany), Rossouw von Solms (information technology), Bert Olivier (philosophy) and Danie Hattingh (automotive engineering).
