The South African National Blood Service and CANSA Relay For Life has teamed up and will be going all out for this year’s event.
The 8th annual CANSA Relay For Life in Port Elizabeth will be held on Friday, 11 March 2016 from 18h00 to 06h00 and on Saturday, 12 March 2016. The event is taking place at the Victoria Park High School Sport Fields and will include a blood drive.
26% of the national blood supply goes to patients who are being treated for cancer and therefore this partnership is such a sensible one, as many people battling cancer require blood transfusions as part of their treatment.
SANBS is very excited to be part of this wonderful initiative, designed to remember those who lost their battle as well as celebrating those who survived.
“This platform is ideal for people to realize the importance of blood donation and we would like to invite everyone to give the gift of life, by donating blood at this event,” says Maryke Harris (SANBS Public Relations Practitioner – Port Elizabeth Branch).
Relay For Life is an international movement that unites cancer survivors and the communities that care about them. It offers everyone in a community, both young and old, the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer and to honour those who have been touched by cancer.
At the 2015 CANSA Relay For Life event 24 units were collected and we are to double that this year. The SANBS blood drive will take place from 19:00-23:00.
To become a blood donor, you must:
- be between the ages of 16 and 65;
- weigh 50kg or more;
- be in good health;
- and lead a sexually safe lifestyle.
