Cape Town – Been struggling to find petrol stations with a
fuel supply in Port Elizabeth over the past week? Well, we have some bad news.
Fuel shortages caused by emergency maintenance work to the
ore and tanker berth in the PE harbour could continue for another two weeks,
Last week companies such as Shell suspended fuel deliveries
to the harbour due to concerns regarding the dangers posed by weathered
infrastructure. In the meantime companies have been depositing fuel supplies in
East London and Mossel Bay instead.
According to Algoa FM, the fuel shortages are not only
frustrating to the consumer, but are also devastating to petrol station owners
in the area.
While fears exist that the entire Eastern Cape could be
affected, the SA Petroleum Industry Association said that only Port Elizabeth
was suffering, as only a fifth of the usual supply is being delivered to the city at present.
Harbour manager, Rajesh Dana, told Netwerk24 that the maintenance work had been completed over the weekend.
It could, however, take another week or two for the situation to normalise.
