In the last two days, the Port Elizabeth Flying Squad members have effected some excellent arrests in the Algoa Park policing area.
On Monday, 18 January 2016 at about 16:00, members from the Flying Squad (W/O Hein Steenkamp, Constables Rayno Te Brugge, Michael Williams, Ludi Retief and Ustinov Fischer) followed up on information received about a possible business robbery being planned at a shop in Sidwell. The members spotted the suspected vehicle and closed in on them, leaving no room for escape. Six suspects aged between 25 and 32 years old were arrested. Two 9mm pistols and 9 cell phones were also seized. The suspects were detained for unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and unlawful possession of unlicensed ammunition. The vehicle, a rented Renault Clio was also confiscated. It was further established that three of the suspects have pending cases of robbery and vehicle hijackings against them. All six suspects are appearing in court on Thursday, 21 January 2016. .
On 19 January 2016 at about 14:00, the same members were involved in the arrest of a 31 year old man for been in possession of mandrax tablets. It is alleged that the members were patrolling in Commercial Road Sidwell when they observed a suspected drug deal taking place in the street. As the suspect got into his vehicle and was driving off, he was stopped. A plastic bag of 100 tablets of mandrax was found on him. The estimated street value is R10 000. A substantial amount of cash was also confiscated. The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
Drugs and substance abuse contributes enormously to the commission of various crimes, including serious and violent crimes. Therefore, the police will continue to crack down on these drug dealers.
The police officers are commended for their swift response and arrests. We encourage the community to continue to provide information on any suspicious activity that is taking place in their areas. In order to eradicate criminal elements it is essential that communities join hands with the police.
