The popular Nelson Mandela Bay Ocean Racing Series returns to Hobie Beach this Sunday for round 6 with hundreds of swimmers, runners and kids expected to take part. Billed as Africa’s largest family beach lifestyle event, the Series already has over 1,000 registered participants across the five events which are on offer each Race Day.
As the Ocean Racing Series moves into the second half of Season 9, the focus for the top participants moves to the overall standings for the remaining 6 race days. Participants accummulate points based on positions at each round with their top 8 finishes out of a possible 11 races counting. Participants have to complete at least 6 race days in order to qualify for the overall standings.
16 year old Daniel Jones has been unstoppable this season and with 5 wins our of 5 races this season he is the clear leader in the Dischem 1km Ocean Swim being chased in the overall standings by Joshua Bellairs and Robert Masterton whilst in the girls division it’s Kirsten Marriott from Amy Keech and Antonella Saporta. In the Dischem 2km Ocean Swim, 18 year old Wayne Jones leads from older brother Jason with veteran PJ Duffy currently in 3rd place overall whilst Liza Bright heads the ladies category from Tracy Gous and Denise Bosman.
In the Kingfisher FM 5km Beach Run it’s 16 year old Keegan Cooke leading the Series ahead of Munro Ferreira and Juwayne Fletcher with 12 year old Megan Snyman leading the ladies division from Annie Oakley and Tania Burger. Staying on the beach, Juan Slabbert and Mile Vermaak head the Swirlers 5km Beach Walk ahead of Colin Korkie and Johan Ferreira with Vermaak leading Tarryn Ferreira and Laura Munnik in the ladies division.
Within the 4 age group categories of the popular Crickley Dairy Kids 1km Beach Run, it’s Chad Brown and Tayla Pretorius who are leading the 6 years and under category, Josh Pretorius and Jodi Wilson lead the 7-8 year category, Zack Serfontein and Tara Sacke the 9 – 10 year category whilst Rayhaan Botha and Monique Ferreira lead the 11-12 year category.
Series membership is necessary in order to take part in the Ocean Racing Series and it costs just R50 to secure your membership and Series number for Season 9. Online registration is best on www.oceanracingseries.com but late entries are permitted on race mornings at Hobie Beach. Entries open at 7.30am and racing starts at 9am. All finishers receive a Bos Sports drink and entry into the lucky draws whilst the kids in the Crickley run each get a finishers medal. Lucky draw prizegiving takes place immediately after the events on the beach with R1,000 cash up for grabs each race day.
