16 May 2017 By MyPortElizabeth

Swift Police action led to the apprehension of four men for possession of two unlicensed firearms on Monday, 15 May 2017 around 22:40.

Police on patrol acted swiftly after receiving information of a blue VW Polo with four occupants allegedly in possession of firearms that was parked at one of the fuel stations in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage. The police followed up on the information, searched the vehicle and nabbed four men in possession of two illegal firearms and 3 empty cartridges. The firearms were a 303 hunting rifle and .38 special revolver with three empty cartridges. Police arrested the suspects, seized the firearms and impounded the vehicle. The four men, aged between 23 and 43, are to appear in the KwaNobuhle Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 17 May 2017 on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms.

In a separate incident, on Tuesday 16 May 2017 around 02:00, police in a patrol vehicle nabbed three men in possession of stolen property and also linked them to a burglary of a hair salon in KwaNobuhle today. Police stopped and asked to search three men walking with backpacks in Siwasa Street, KwaNobuhle and found five haircut machines with other several hair products. Preliminary investigation revealed that the items were stolen from a hair salon situated in Mabandla Street, KwaNobuhle. The owner was alerted by the police about the burglary at his business.

KwaNobuhle Station Commander, Colonel Dial Kettledas said “The police are commended for their swift actions, but I am full of praise to the people who alerted the police after they saw suspects with firearms and decided not to shun away. The information that was shared with the police resulted in a recovery of firearms that could has killed or injured someone, and as police we are going to conduct a thorough investigation, and to see whether the suspects could not be linked to other cases such as robberies. Police would like to encourage more people with information about illegal firearms to share it with the police. The information shared on Crime Stop 08600 10111 is treated confidential and a caller would remain anonymous. Let us share information and support each other in the fight against crime. Information may also be shared via Crime Line SMS 32211”.
