The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape would like to alert the general public and businesses in Mthatha and surrounding areas about the existence and circulation of ink stained bank notes within that area. This follows after an ATM (Automated Bank Teller Machine) was bombed at Myezo Spar, next to Walter Sisulu University, Mthatha at 02:45 this morning.
An undisclosed amount of cash was taken and the ATM was badly damaged. No one was injured during the incident. The stolen money was automatically stained with navy/blue ink. The intensity of the ink stains varies from note to note. Some bank notes will be heavily stained while others might be stained very lightly. The intensity is immaterial, since the slightest mark/spot of this ink on a bank note will render it invalid in any official South African bank or authorised financial institution.
Members of the public are encouraged to be on the lookout for these notes and cautious when they do any financial transactions as it is believed that the criminals will try to buy or exchange the money to unsuspecting people or businesses.
No arrests have been made and any person with information regarding this incident to please contact the investigating officer, Captain Bongani Mtirara-079 8900 763.
